Is Reiki Safe for Children?

The short answer is yes—Reiki is safe for children when performed appropriately.

In fact, children often respond more quickly and naturally to Reiki than adults.

To understand why, we need to explore how Reiki works with a child’s energy system, why it is gentle, and what benefits it can offer.

How Children Naturally Experience Life Through Energy

Children experience life directly through:

  • emotions,
  • imagination,
  • trust,
  • play,
  • curiosity,
  • and connection.

They do not overanalyze experiences the way adults do.

For example:

  • A child can cry intensely one moment and laugh joyfully five minutes later.
  • They release emotions quickly instead of storing them for years.
  • Their energy moves naturally unless repeated stress interrupts that flow.

Children are in a constant state of growth and learning, and their emotional and energetic imprints are not yet hardened by years of habitual stress or limiting beliefs.

This is why children often:

  • recover emotionally faster,
  • forgive more easily,
  • and return to joy quickly after upset.

Their chakras are naturally designed to stay in movement.

How a Child’s Environment Shapes Their Chakras

Because children are highly sensitive, their chakras absorb information from their surroundings constantly.

Their beliefs about:

  • safety,
  • love,
  • confidence,
  • trust,
  • communication,
  • and self-worth

begin forming very early.

These beliefs become the “software” that programs the chakra system.

That is why when parents come to me for Energy healing session, I emphasize on creating a happy and balanced family life for their children early on.

Childhood experiences and Parent’s Belief system influence in Child’s Chakras

Parent teaching child
  • Root chakra (security): If a child feels safe at home, this chakra develops strong grounding.
  • Sacral chakra (creativity & emotions): Playful, expressive children generally have vibrant sacral energy.
  • Heart chakra (love & trust): Children who receive love and attention often have open heart chakras.

Example:

  • A 7-year-old child who enjoys painting, plays freely with friends, and is nurtured at home shows balanced sacral and heart chakras.
  • Minor emotional blocks (like shyness or fear of a test) can be gently released with short Reiki sessions.

1. Root Chakra in Childhood — Safety & Security

Healthy Root Chakra Development

The root chakra develops through:

  • feeling physically safe,
  • consistent routines,
  • emotional stability at home,
  • affection,
  • food security,
  • and supportive parenting.

When a child feels:

  • “I am safe,”
  • “I belong,”
  • “I am protected,”

their root chakra becomes grounded and balanced.

Real-Life Example

A 5-year-old child:

  • sleeps peacefully,
  • enjoys playing,
  • explores confidently,
  • and separates comfortably at school.

This usually reflects strong root chakra energy.

The child trusts life.

What Happens When Root Chakra Energy Gets Disturbed?

Children are extremely sensitive to:

  • arguments at home,
  • yelling,
  • emotional neglect,
  • financial stress in parents,
  • divorce,
  • or unstable environments.

Even if adults think:

“The child is too young to understand,”

the child’s energy body still absorbs the emotional atmosphere.

Example

A child living in a home with constant conflict may:

  • become fearful,
  • clingy,
  • anxious,
  • overly quiet,
  • or develop sleep issues.

The child may not verbally explain stress, but the root chakra begins storing insecurity.

2. Sacral Chakra in Childhood — Creativity & Emotions

The sacral chakra is naturally very active in children.

Children express sacral energy through:

  • imagination,
  • drawing,
  • dancing,
  • storytelling,
  • curiosity,
  • play,
  • and emotional expression.

Healthy children naturally:

  • laugh loudly,
  • cry openly,
  • ask endless questions,
  • and move freely.

This is flowing sacral chakra energy.

Real-Life Example of Healthy Sacral Energy

A 7-year-old who:

  • paints creatively,
  • invents imaginary games,
  • dances freely,
  • and openly expresses feelings

usually has balanced sacral energy.

They feel emotionally safe enough to express themselves.

How Adults Accidentally Block Sacral Energy

Sometimes adults unknowingly suppress this chakra by saying:

  • “Stop crying.”
  • “Don’t be silly.”
  • “That’s not important.”
  • “Big boys don’t cry.”
  • “Be quiet.”
  • “You’re too sensitive.”

Over time, children begin believing:

  • emotions are unsafe,
  • creativity is unimportant,
  • or self-expression is embarrassing.

This starts creating energetic contraction in the sacral chakra.

Another Example: A naturally artistic child who is constantly criticized for “wasting time drawing” may slowly:

  • stop creating,
  • suppress imagination,
  • become emotionally withdrawn,
  • or seek approval constantly.

The sacral chakra loses its natural flow.

Heart Chakra in Childhood — Love & Trust

Children naturally live from the heart chakra.

They:

  • love openly,
  • trust easily,
  • forgive quickly,
  • and connect deeply.

The heart chakra develops through:

  • affection,
  • emotional attention,
  • validation,
  • kindness,
  • and feeling emotionally seen.

Real-Life Example: A child who:

  • hugs freely,
  • shares toys,
  • expresses affection openly,
  • and feels emotionally secure

usually has balanced heart chakra energy.

How Heart Chakra Blocks Begin

Children become emotionally guarded when they repeatedly experience:

  • rejection,
  • criticism,
  • emotional neglect,
  • bullying,
  • comparison,
  • or conditional love.

Real Life Example:If a child only receives praise for achievements:

  • good grades,
  • winning competitions,
  • behaving perfectly,

they may unconsciously develop the belief: “I am lovable only when I perform.”

This creates early heart chakra imbalance.

As adults, these children often struggle with:

  • people pleasing,
  • fear of rejection,
  • difficulty trusting,
  • or emotional dependency.

Why Children Heal Faster with Reiki

Baby receiving Reiki

This is one of the most fascinating aspects of energy healing.

Children heal faster because their blocks are:

  • newer,
  • lighter,
  • and less reinforced.

Adults often carry:

  • decades of repeated emotional patterns,
  • unresolved trauma,
  • chronic stress,
  • and deeply rooted beliefs.

Children usually do not.

Children Haven’t Yet Built Strong Energetic Walls

Adults often unconsciously protect themselves with emotional armor:

  • “I can’t trust people.”
  • “I must stay strong.”
  • “No one understands me.”
  • “I’m not good enough.”

These beliefs become deeply embedded energetic patterns.

Children haven’t fully developed these protective identities yet.

Their energy remains:

  • flexible,
  • responsive,
  • and open.

Children Respond Quickly to Energy Work

Children naturally connect with:

  • visualization,
  • imagination,
  • play,
  • colors,
  • movement,
  • and touch.

This makes Reiki and energy healing feel natural to them.

Example:A child afraid of school exams may respond beautifully to:

  • a short Reiki session,
  • calming breathing,
  • visualization of golden light,
  • and reassuring affirmations.

The fear may reduce very quickly because the energy has not become a permanent pattern yet.

Adults Require Deeper Unlearning

For adults, healing often involves:

  • releasing old emotional wounds,
  • changing long-held beliefs,
  • rebuilding self-worth,
  • and retraining emotional responses.

An adult may intellectually understand:

“I should not worry.”

But emotionally and energetically, the body may still carry:

  • fear,
  • tension,
  • survival stress,
  • and years of conditioning.

This is why adult healing usually requires:

  • repetition,
  • consistency,
  • self-awareness,
  • and daily practice.

The Most Important Insight

Children naturally teach us what balanced energy looks like.

Before life experiences create fear and emotional armor, children:

  • trust,
  • feel,
  • express,
  • create,
  • forgive,
  • and live in the present moment.

Energy healing helps adults slowly return to this natural state again—not by becoming childish, but by becoming energetically open, emotionally balanced, and internally free.

  • Their chakras are less rigid—blocks are newer and less reinforced by years of fixed beliefs.
  • Children respond quickly to energy clearing, visualization, and playful exercises.
  • Healing doesn’t require dismantling long-held patterns—they are open and malleable.

Why Reiki Is safe for Children?

1. Reiki Is Non-Invasive and Gentle for children

One of the most important reasons Reiki is safe for children is that it is completely non-invasive.

  • There are no needles, drugs, or physical manipulations.
  • Reiki practitioners lay hands lightly on or near the child, transferring healing energy through gentle touch or by hovering hands slightly above the body.
  • The child can participate actively or passively; they can even keep their eyes open, read, play, or talk during the session.

Example: A 5-year-old child feeling anxious about starting school may sit on a parent’s lap while a Reiki practitioner places hands lightly on their head, shoulders, or stomach.

Within minutes, the child often reports feeling calmer, more focused, and emotionally supported.

Because Reiki works with the child’s own energy, it is safe even for very young children, infants, or those with sensitivities.

2. Reiki Helps Children Build Emotional Resilience

Children often experience emotional and physical stress that they cannot yet fully articulate:

  • Fear of the dark
  • Separation anxiety from parents
  • Bullying at school
  • Illness or recovery from injury
  • Overwhelm from school or extracurricular activities

No parent want their child to experience any of the bove experiences. However, some of these experiences can happen suddenly e.g during sleep over, when you all are on vacation, school where parents can not be present all the time etc.

Reiki can help balances their energy system and supports the release of stagnant or blocked emotions resulting from these experiences.

Ideally parents doing daily self-healing with Reiki along with their children experience that children are more resilient and stronger.

Real life Example:

A 7-year-old child enjoyed her dancing practice and she did not think much about the result of her performance in the dance exam. She did not even have the performance anxiety. However, her parent appeared quite upset by the results and she arranged to have another round of dance exam.

When the parent requested the healing session for the kid, I did not experience much blockages in any of her chakra- except little block in her heart chakra. It was there because she felt her mother is disappointed in her.

So, she received a brief Reiki session focused on her heart chakras and mother received reiki on her sacral chakra, thrid eye chakra and heart chakra. The child reported feeling more confident and calm, often carrying this energy through the day.

Because children release emotions naturally and don’t yet have decades of entrenched beliefs, Reiki can produce quicker emotional shifts than in adults.

3. Reiki Complements Traditional Care, Not Replaces It

It’s important to clarify that Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment.

For children with serious health issues, Reiki is used as a supportive therapy to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, and enhance overall well-being.

Real life Example:

A child had a major fall on his back and broke his bone. It needed emergency surgery. The child was agitated and in pain due to envionment in the hospital.

So his parent requested a reiki session before, and post-surgery to reduce the anxiety, improve sleep, and promote relaxation.

Over a span of several weeks, the child reported increase in his energy level and slowly followed all exercise advice by his orthopedic surgeon.

Reiki does not interfere with medications or medical procedures and can make children feel more comfortable and emotionally secure during treatment.

4. Reiki Encourages Mind-Body Awareness from a Young Age

Practicing Reiki helps children learn early about self-awareness, relaxation, and emotional regulation. Even simple self-Reiki techniques can teach children to:

  • Recognize when they feel stressed or upset
  • Take a few moments to breathe and calm themselves
  • Direct energy to areas of discomfort or tension

Real life Example: A 8-year-old child with frequent stomachaches due to school stress was guided to place his hands gently over the abdomen while focusing on calm breathing. He received 3 reiki sessions in the span of 3 weeks.

When his mother noticed that he was generally calm, behaving well at school and at home, she asked to learn Reiki healing.

Mother learned to do self-healing with Reiki everyday. She also did the reiki daily routine with the child. Now the child is enjoying his school, his extra-curricular classes and mother does not any any more complains from missed classed.

Over time, this teaches the child self-regulation skills that last a lifetime.

Guidelines for Reiki with Children

To ensure safety and effectiveness:

  • Sessions should be short and age-appropriate (5–20 minutes depending on the child’s age and attention span).
  • Children should be comfortable and fully consent (even a toddler can give consent by indicating they’re ready to receive).
  • Focus should be on gentle touch, energy balancing, and emotional support rather than prolonged or intensive techniques.
  • Parents or guardians should be present during Reiki healing session, providing a sense of security.
  • Reiki can be integrated into daily routines, including bedtime rituals, exam stress relief, or recovery from minor illnesses.

Conclusion: Reiki Is Safe and Beneficial for Children

Reiki is safe, gentle, and highly effective for children because:

  • Their chakras are flexible and receptive.
  • Healing is non-invasive.
  • Children release emotional blocks naturally and quickly.
  • Reiki supports emotional regulation, resilience, creativity, and self-awareness.
  • Sessions are adaptable to age, attention span, and comfort level.

In contrast, an adult facing similar performance anxiety may require repeated sessions and a combination of Reiki, meditation, and belief-shifting practices to see comparable results.

Key Takeaway: Reiki works with the natural openness of a child’s energy system, making it not only safe but highly effective. With gentle guidance and consistent practice, children can build emotional resilience, energy balance, and self-awareness that serve them for life.
